This is a piece I created during the redesign of this website. After working with the bold black fixed width lines of the Time(x) poster, I wanted to continue exploring that technique for my contact page graphic. I started with some pencil sketches, scanned em’ in and started making it bold and black. I had every intention of leaving it black, white and simple, but got carried away and love the direction it took off in.

I wanted a retro phone to represent the contact page for a few reasons; I’ve never drawn a wall phone, I havent seen anyone else draw a wall phone lately (or ever), and I think of phones as being.. well, ways to contact people!

I vectored some speckles I made with ink and a brush a few months ago for texture. The wood grain is inspired by many works I’ve seen, but was drawn with my Wacom tablet and smoothed out with my mouse and the pen tool. This project displays one of the furthest I’ve ever brought texturing (beside my LSC Poster) purely in Illustrator. The more in Illustrator, the better.

A small bit of wear and tear was added in Photoshop afterwards and some custom text (borrowed from the base of Highlands – LostType) done the same way. The result, Contact.
