Wow! Nice Shot!
In the spirit of working on more personal projects (which end up almost always being the most well received and most enjoyable) Latham Arnott and I teamed up to work on this animation based on a video game called Rocket League, a soccer game with cars, basically. The goal of tha animation was to push our styles, learn some new tools in animation, and carry a project out from beginning to end with no client interaction.
We had a fun time working on some of the plasma effects in Trapcode's Particular. Latham of course did all the motion in this, but I got a chance to peek in and advice and sort of brain storm some of the stuff with him, very fun! Sound design compliments of Jeff Guerra.
Process & Sketches
Working out the general storyboard was pretty clear in my head, but once I actually started seeing how this would all be laid out, I had to make a lot of design changes. Below is the quick rough storyboard I made to show Latham the concept. At first, the car would drive for a while, then we'd cut to the ball...then the car again, ball, quicker and quicker until they meet, the car hits the ball into the air, and then goes up chasing it to perform the flip kick and score.
Once we started seeing what that would required, and because we wanted the clip to be very short and punchy, we skipped that part of the story and had the car just mysteriously and unexpectedly hop and start floating up for the ball (before you even know there is a ball). We also added the goal text at the end because otherwise we feared there would be very little context of what actually happened, that there is a game in play, basically soccer with cars. With the goal text it tells you, yes that was a ball that got hit, and it went into a goal.
